Day Services

The League provides Adult Day Services (ADS) for people with cerebral palsy and related disabilities.

The purpose of each ADS is to assist people with high support needs to make lifestyle choices and to identify and work towards achieving their goals. The emphasis is to support people to be active members of their chosen community and to work towards desired levels of independence.

The Adult Day Service consists of three components:

  1. Community Access Service
  2. Independent Living Training
  3. Centre Based Day Service

A person may use a combination of these components for daytime support. The service assists people clarify their goals, determine their support needs and come to agreement on the support that can be provided. To negotiate an individual program contact the closest local service. Other support such as therapy and transport may also be accessed.

Community Access

This service supports people to investigate and access local community activities and facilitates such as social groups, libraries, special interest groups and general community services.

The Community Access Service is designed to assist people to develop networks of support which allows greater involvement in the community setting of their choice. The services is individualised, and based on a person’s needs and goals. The support provided is on a one to one basis.

Independent Living Training

The service provides support to people who want to gain skills and confidence in a range of activities which will allow them greater independence and control in their day to day lives.

People use the Independent Living Training service to obtain support when they want to develop skills in areas including:

  • Use of communication aids and devices
  • Financial or household management
  • Use of an electric wheelchair
  • Shopping
  • Using public transport

The service offered is always based on a person’s goals and support is provided on a personalised time limited basis.

Centre Based Day Service

The Centre Based Day Service provides additional essential day time support for individuals in their community.

The service’s main purpose is to ensure people receive the personal care and other supports they require during the day, in situations where they may not have adequate supports within their community networks.

Daytime support services strive to add individual choice and interests for people who use the service by offering a selection of activities on a group basis. Examples of activities offered by services include cooking, general interest discussions, arts and crafts, gardening and computer work.

Some services have been able to offer small group activities away from the centre, including shopping, going to movies and fishing.

The number and variety of activities a Centre Based Day Service can offer depends on the staff and volunteer resources available. Therefore the Centre Based Day Services has to focus on the group rather than individual needs. Furthermore the service is restricted in the numbers of individuals it is able to support.
