The Australian government’s Productivity Commission recently conducted an extensive inquiry into Australia’s disability care system, finding it “underfunded, unfair, fragmented and inefficient” and failing to meet the needs of Australians with disabilities.
They have released a draft report recommending a complete overhaul of the way disability services are funded and delivered, including establishing a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as well as a separate National Insurance Injury Scheme (NIIS).

About the proposed NDIS
The proposed NDIS would:
- provide support to approximately 360,000 eligible people with disabilities
- ensure fair assessment of eligibility
- create a consistent funding pool to provide support for people with disabilities, their families and carers
- be nationally consistent, fair, and efficient
- put the choices of people with disabilities at its centre, allowing their own choice of support, services and providers
It will require an additional $6.3 billion in federal funding, and would be rolled out nationally between 2015 and 2018.

This is our best chance to help fix a system that is irretrievably broken. The proposed system has the potential to make a real and positive difference to the lives of Australians with disabilities and provide the nation with tangible, sustainable, long-term financial and social benefits.
We must convince our federal politicians to support the NDIS and secure government commitment to implementing this change.
